Welcome to the D.C. Access to Justice Commission

The D.C. Access to Justice Commission was created by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 2005 to help improve the ability of low- and moderate- income residents to access the civil justice system. The Commission is also responsible for raising awareness in our community of the need for equal access to justice.

Justice for All

In 2024, the Commission released Justice for All: Report on Self-Help in the District of Columbia and Recommendations for a More Efficient and Coordinated Future.

Public Funding for Civil Legal Services

The Commission advocates each year for the Access to Justice Initiative, a District public funding program that gives critical support to the civil legal services network.

Raising the Bar in D.C.

Through Raising the Bar in D.C., the Commission recognizes top D.C. law firms that provide financial support to organizations delivering vital civil legal services to District residents in need.

Delivering Justice

In 2019, the Commission released Delivering Justice: Addressing Civil Legal Needs in the District of Columbia. The report documented the evolution of civil legal needs and services in the District.

The Commission is grateful to have many partners across the D.C. legal community who share a commitment to helping those most in need. You too can play an important part in making equal access to justice a reality.
